Local jobless rate jumps
Jan. 31--For the month of December, McDowell County reported a jobless rate of 15.1 percent, which is a slight increase from the previous month.
McDowell's unemployment rate went up slightly from the 14.9 percent rate in November to 15.1 percent in December. McDowell still ranks among the top 10 counties in North Carolina with high unemployment rates. The county's rate for December is 4.2 points higher than the statewide rate of 10.9 percent.
The county's rate for December means 3,066 McDowell workers are listed as unemployed, out of a labor force of 20,330.
Unemployment rates increased in 86 of North Carolina's 100 counties in December, according to statistics released recently by the state's Employment Security Commission. Rates decreased in nine counties, and remained the same in five.
"This recession continues to affect North Carolina's economy," said ESC Chairman Moses Carey Jr. "Virtually every major job sector has been impacted. The ESC continues to work hard in providing many services to the citizens of North Carolina. Whether it be job search assistance or the issuing of unemployment benefits to those who are eligible, the ESC remains committed to the citizens of our state."
North Carolina had 44 counties which were at or below the state's unadjusted jobless rate of 10.9 percent. Rates increased in all of the state's Metropolitan Statistical Areas.
Of the surrounding counties, Rutherford reported the highest rate for December at 16.9. Rutherford also had the third highest rate in the state for that month. Burke had a 14.2 percent rate. Mitchell reported a 13 percent rate while Yancey reported a 12.4 percent rate. Avery reported a 9.7 percent rate. Buncombe reported a rate of 8.3 percent, the lowest rate of the surrounding counties.
Orange County had the state's lowest unemployment rate in December, at 6.2 percent. Graham County had the highest rate in all of North Carolina with 17.6 percent.
